Daddy’s Girl Stir Fry

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

Tonight I will be heading over to my favorite venue here in Manchester - The Black Brimmer. Daddy’s has been co-sponsoring their latest promotion - “Rockstar - ManchVegas”! (ManchVegas is a term that us locals use here to refer to Manchester, NH. Don’t know why - we just do)

Anyhoo, The Brimmer has been on a search for the best singer in Manchester, NH. Me…I am one of the judges. I am the “Paula” of the judges because I was brought up to always say something nice :) Also judging tonight is another “Rockstar”….of the “Supernova” kind. ‘Rockstar Supernova’ contestant Josh Logan will be in the house as well as the folks from WGIR.Â

If you are in the area tonight, come hang out - it’s a blast! Packed house, good people, good friends, and fantastic food! I personally recommend the “Daddy’s Girl Stir-Fry” ;)

Music Business Legend

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have always been one who could sit and discuss the business side of the music industry for hours and hours on end. I still to this day, love reading biography books of the greats of the music business. Guys like Clive Davis, David Geffen and Ahmet Ertegun - where they came from to the empire they built fascinates me. Guys like this have built the foundation of what the music business is, was and will become. They have worked with all the greats - from Led Zepplin, to Aretha Franklin, to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, to Whitney Houston, the Rolling Stones, Otis Reading….the list is seriously endless. They didn’t have the tricks of the trade back then, there were no set standards then, no “footsteps” to follow in - everything that they created was just that - their creation. Pure wisdom, creativity, intelligence and most of all passion and the drive where failing is not an option. Not to mention a whoooole lotta luck. These are some of the most significant people in the music business. Period.

It is with great sadness that I turn on my computer this morning to read that 83 year old Ahmet Ertegun - Founder of Atlantic Records, is in a very deep coma and on life support after a terrible fall he took on October 29th at a Rolling Stones concert.Â

Ahmet Ertegun

According to a news report, Dr. Howard Riina, his neurosurgeon, told Reuters in a telephone interview that the music industry legend “sustained a severe brain injury after a fall. He’s in a deep coma and in critical condition. His chance of a meaningful recovery is small.”

Say a little prayer for Mr. Ertegun and his family - that although the chance is small, that he comes through this coma and does have a meaningful recovery.

For me, as I always do, whenever I feel like a need a little pep talk, I head over to the Berklee College of Music website, where they have a full transcript of the speech that Mr. Ertegun made to the graduating class of 1991. Check it out here:

The Promotional Screeching Halt!

Monday, December 4th, 2006
11 months out of the year, it is basically insane here in the Daddy’s promotions department. From booking clinics and meet & greets, setting up in-stores product sales events, fishing through a 7,694,153 requests for donations, gear, charity, discounts, sponsorships, advertising….you get the picture. There are times throughout the year that I need 7 of me to get it all done. And then like clock work, every year come Dec. 1st, it comes to a screeching halt! Well, most of it anyway. There are not clinics, in-store events, meet & greets, product demonstrations etc. The Daddy’s stores are busy with holiday shoppers, our manufacturers are busy focusing on the holidays, our clincians are finally getting home to their families they haven’t seen all year long etc. So things tend to slow down a bit. The only thing that does pick up here in the Daddy’s promotions department is the requests for donations. Â

As you can imagine, we get flooded with these requests throughout the year, but as it stands to reason, those numbers increase during the holiday season. Its tough for Daddy’s, as I imagine it is for most companies, because as much as we would like to say YES to everyone, we just can’t. We can’t fulfill the request of a new guitar because “I lost mine at my last gig” - that I definitely can’t help you with. Nor can I help you with PA donation for your ‘benefit’ show to help raise funds for your studio time,  benefit shows to raise funds to press your band’s debut CD, to help with your buddy’s legal fund so he can get off on the DWI charge….you get the idea.  While I realize that all of the above is a total bummer, the only thing I can offer is a bit of advice. For the guy who needs a new guitar - DON’T LEAVE YOUR STUFF BEHIND! For the guy who needs cash to press the band’s CD - GET A JOB! And for the legal fund benefit - DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!Â

The moral of the story is, that if you are going to send over a donation request, Daddy’s will put consideration into music education, homeless and needy families, less fortunate kids etc. For example, this holiday season, we are involved with the Headstart program of Manchester, Caregivers (we get gift bags for the elderly-personal care products, playing cards) and a local Men’s Homeless shelter (we give winter hats, razors, etc).Â

Now, how will I spend the remainder of December you ask? Well, this is the time of year I help out at the stores. Last year I was with the Daddy’s Manchester crew and this year I will be over at Daddy’s Portsmouth, NH helping the staff out there. Come on in and say HI! Other than that, a little vacation to rest up for 2007!

Buh Bye…Â Candi

It’s not just the GEAR!

Friday, December 1st, 2006

With all due respect to Fred “Daddy” Bramante, our leader and Chris Gleason, our VP and author of the “Music GEAR” section of this blog, at Daddy’s Sound Solutions it’s way more than just the gear. Case in point: Yesterday we went to a church to try to help the priest and the folk group understand and correct the fact that their recently installed sound system was not “cutting it” for live music. This group is not a “heavy metal” church band by any means. They use synth tracks, amplified acoustic guitar, and voices. Period! No drums, bass, electric guitar. A real “folk group.” They should not be putting a strain on any system. They were sold 8 excellent 70Volt “Foreground Music” speakers, OK but not great for spoken word, not enough for live music of any kind.

Their equipment rack was loaded with excellent gear, including a Shure P4800 digital processor, one of our favorites here at Daddy’s Sound Solutions. It has a “user net” of $2665 although it can be bought at a discount even (and especially) from us. This unit is a 4 in, 8 out digital processor that can be programmed to do just about any kind of audio processing you can imagine including, but not limited to, equalization, feedback reduction, compression and limiting, and crossover functions. It is programmed by computer and IT WORKS GREAT!

When we attached our laptop to examine the presets we found that this $2500 piece had been used as one, 31-band graphic equalizer feeding 2 outputs. I have a somewhat shopworn but warrantied Peavey Q1311 in my office that will do exactly the same thing. You can buy it for $100 by emailing me. That would have saved the church $2400 and gotten the Peavey piece off my shelf. $2400!!! Not peanuts…and certainly enough to buy a ton of gear from Fred and Chris.

The point is that a great piece of gear can easily be a waste if it is not used or installed properly. If you need help with your sound (or video or lighting) system, please give me a call.
