Hi-Tech Day is Done!

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

The first day of the Daddy’s Junky Music “2007 Product Preview Show” is over and it was a HUGE success! Man, you guys love gear, huh!?! You kept our manufacturer reps and product specialists on their toes!

The day started with Chris Gleason - Daddy’s Sr. VP and Daddy’s Boston GM Hirsh Gardner taking a few minutes to speak to over 40 reps that were on hand today…

First stop for everyone before getting to see the new gear was the prize table where folks were registering to win everything from T-shirts, to hats, to gift cards and everything in between. The grand prize of the weekend, and you will still have time to register on Saturday during “Guitars, Amps and Drums” day is the new and beautiful “BFG” (Barely Finished Guitar) from Gibson! (We will be announcing the winner on Monday)

Next up….all the fun!

Tom Glenn and Robert Marcello from Roland/BOSS prepare for their presentation!

Things are getting busy at the Yamaha booth!

Who doesn’t need the hottest new microphone’s from Shure?!

Is that Eric Clapton hanging at the Digitech booth? Weird…. :)

The M-Audio presentation.

I certainly hope to see you all tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 24) at Daddy’s Boston as we finish up the “2007 Product Preview Show” with the latest in guitars, amps and drums! I got a sneak peek at some of the stuff tonight - WOW!

See you all tomorrow!

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

What a LONG day we had at Daddy’s Boston today. We were nailing down the final details for Fridays start of the Daddy’s Junky Music “2007 Product Preview Show” and it looks like it going to be great! Gear was being shipped in all day long from the manufacturers, drum kits were being set up, tables ready to go, and in some cases the manufacturers brought in actual booths! Very cool! Hope to see you all this weekend!

I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!!!

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007
Look, I hate to be the bearer of bad news and to be the one to say “I told you so”, but you didn’t actually think that the brothers Van Halen and David Lee Roth we’re actually going to get along long enough to tour did you?  According to Pollstar,  the tour that was never officially announced is “officially postponed”.  Shocking.  So, the winner of the Van Halen pool we had going is the person who picked that it wouldn’t make it to day one!  Wait…that’s me!  :)

On a happier note, I am currently in my hotel room in Boston getting ready to head over to the store for day 2 of set up for the upcoming Daddy’s Junky Music ”2007 Product Preview Show” this weekend at Daddy’s Boston.

Only 1 day away before the madness begins!  We were in the store late last night setting up tables, signs, the stage area, going through the dozens and dozens of UPS boxes that are coming in with a TON of new gear and we will be there again all day/night today to finish the set up.

The show starts tomorrow (Friday, February 23) at 11am and runs til’ 7pm and features the newest and hottest Hi-Tech gear from today’s top manufacturers!  You will only see this stuff at Daddy’s!  Don’t forget that there are presentations going on all day and all the manufacturer reps will be on hand.
Saturday of course is “Guitars, Amps and Drum” day, which runs from 10am to 6pm - and again, manufacturer reps will be on hand with presentations that day as well including a Pearl Drum presentation at 3pm featuring the incredible MIKE MANGINI, and Godin Guitar presentation by MR. ROBERT GODIN himself!  For a complete list of all presentation times go to http://www.daddys.com/.  Also on Saturday, there is a rumor that “Daddy” himself will be popping into Daddy’s Boston to check out the show (he does actually exist ya know!)
In the mean time, I will be updating the blog all day today with more photos of the set up and some of the gear that is coming in, so don’t forget to check back in.  PLUS we will be doing live updates all day on Friday and Saturday as well so don’t forget to pop on over and say HI!  You probably won’t have time to check the blogs on Friday and Saturday because you are coming to the “2007 Product Preview Show” right!?  All the cool kids are coming…
That’s it for now - see you all SOON! Candi
P.S. I have some VERY cool announcements to make next week for some upcoming events

There are only 8 more days until the Daddy’s Junky Music “2007 New Product Show” and there is still soooo much to do - minor details, but still lots of them!

Alot happens in a few days…

Friday, February 9th, 2007

Since I last spoke to you guys (all of 2 days ago) - remember, we discussed the possible train wreck that will be the Van Halen tour, The Police getting back together, rock star babies, the VERY cool Daddy’s Junky Music 2007 Product Preview Show at Daddy’s Boston and I left you with me running out the door to drop of Tama Beaters to a certain someone (we’ll get to that in a second). Well, in the all of 2 days since we discussed such topics - a few more things have come up, so let’s get to it.

Let’s begin with the HUGE announcement from Sharon Osbourne that Ozzfest is FREE this year! Are you kidding me! No matter what you think of the woman, good or bad, there is no denying that she is a marketing genius! She can now raise the price of sponsorship based on the fact that, on top of the obvious benefit to being an Ozzfest sponsor, she can now guarantee that their (the sponsors) respective websites will be seen by MILLIONS based on the fact that its the sponsor websites people need to go to to get their free tickets! The woman is freakin’ brilliant!

ozzfest1.jpg
Then, I finally got the email that I had been waiting for from the folks at Mapex Drums - Daddy’s will be hosting 3 Gregg Bissonette clinics in the spring! YAY! Those of you who have been regulars at Daddy’s clinics have been asking me for years to get Gregg in and unfortunately at the time we were not a Mapex dealer. But, we are now and what a way to kick off Mapex clinics than with Gregg Bissonette himself! We are currently in the booking stages, as soon as the dates are official, we will certainly let you guys know! There are some very cool details that we are working on for these clinics that I can’t wait to tell you about! So excited….

gregg11.jpg
And lastly, just when you think things couldn’t get any cooler at the 2007 Product Preview Show at Daddy’s Boston - you know, the 2 day event (Feb. 23 & 24) where you can check out the latest in gear and music technology before anyone else, plus you can put orders in for said new gear at a great discount, and where there will be product presentations all day long - turns out that the folks at Pearl have enlisted non other than the amazing MIKE MANGINI to do the Pearl Drums presentation and the Roland/BOSS folks have enlisted masterful guitarist Robert Marcello! (Robert will also be doing a FREE Roland/BOSS guitar clinic at Daddy’s Portsmouth on Thursday, February 22 @ 6pm - give the boys in Portsmouth a shout for more details 603-436-1142). It’s going to be an increadible 2 days and best of all - it’s FREE to everyone! Check it out here www.daddys.com

Oh yeah, those Tama Beaters, I dropped those off to Daddy’s pal and Sevendust drummer Morgan Rose :) Morgan and the boys were in the area for a week doing tour rehersals. So I dropped off the beaters and stuck around to catch some of the rehersals, listened to some new tunes off their upcoming “Alpha” record and had a fantastic dinner with them at this great little place called “A1″.

That’s it for now…

RIP Anna Nicole Smith

Events, tours, gossip…so much going on!

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

There is so much stuff happening I don’t know where to begin!  Do we begin with what is sure to be the biggest nightmare tour of year?  You know who I’m talking about - the long awaited return of David Lee Roth to Van Halen!  WHAT?!  You’re kidding right?  While I’m sure there is and will be excitement for this tour for us ol’ school Van Halen fans, please tell me that you guys at least have your eyes wide open and your expectations low for inevitable clashing of DLR and the brothers Van Halen.  I’ve got a pool going on how many shows deep they get in before they are in opposite buildings…nevermind dressing rooms and busses.  How many shows deep can I put you guys down for?

Next up…THE POLICE ARE TOURING!  YEE HAW!  Now, I know what you are saying, “those guys can’t get along any better than Van Halen!”  While that may be true, at least Sting and Co. were never caught walking around looking like this…

Ok, who am I kidding…I’ll be at the Van Halen show rockin’ out with the rest of ya!  :)

Anyway, a HUGE congrat’s go out to Godsmack bassist Robbie Merrill and his wife Heather as they celebrate the birth of their first child, a daughter named Nianni Chay Merrill, born on January 18. She’s VERY cute!

Also a HUGE congrat’s (I can’t believe I am going to say this) goes out to Kenny Aronoff for his team, The Colts FINALLY winning a Superbowl!  Kenny and family were down on the 40 yard line cheering on the team that came back from an 18 point lead to crush us (”us” meaning us NE Patriots fans) in the playoff game, which got them to the Superbowl.  Happy now Kenny!?  Jeez…

Ok…what else…Oh yeah, don’t forget to tune into WAAF because they are hosting a very cool contest right now that Daddy’s is participating in.  WAAF is asking people to register on their website at www.waaf.com to win a chance to have ZAKK WYLDE perform in your work lunchroom!  That’s right, Zakk is going to come to your work and perform for you and your co-workers!  If you ask him real nice, maybe he’ll talk to your boss for you about that raise!  I mean c’mon…who’s going to say no to Zakk! :)  Also, you can win a Zakk Wylde signature series guitar, courtesy of Daddy’s!

And last, but certainly not least, please make sure you come to Daddy’s Boston on February 23 and 24 for the “2007 Product Preview Show”!  If you are a gear head, THIS is place to be!  Every year a bunch of us head out to the NAMM show in California to check out the latest in gear and music technology - basically, we get to see all of it before it becomes available to the public.  And since NAMM is not open to the public, we decided to ask the manufacturers if they would bring it to us to show you guys!  You can check out full details here www.daddys.com

That’s it for now…I’m off to go drop off some Tama Beaters to….well…check back tomorrow and you’ll see who they were for :)

The Long Anticipated Behringer Factory Tour

Friday, February 2nd, 2007

The long anticipated Behringer factory tour has been completed and it did not disappoint.
On the way the factory (about ½ hour outside Zhongshan), we crossed over the Pearl River, third longest in China, and the contrast of the old wooden skiff in the foreground, modern barges plying the river and factories for as long as the eye could see, was incredible.  We arrived at the factory location and were greeted with a festive banner and balloons.

china6.JPG

Behringer just moved into this campus location six short months ago and they’ve done a wonderful job of getting it up and running.  I was fortunate that my tour group was lead by Uli Behringer, the founder of the company and Michael Deep, CEO of the Behringer Group.  First stop was to the Research and Development department.  The top execs quickly pointed out that they have recently invested 3.6 million dollars this department to insure that the components they use and the finished Behringer products will work and hold up.  Most of the investment was spent on testing machines that will expose various Behringer products to harsh conditions such as thousands of repetitions of use, extreme heat, cold and humidity, all to make sure that they will hold up to the punishment.  We can’t show you those machines but Behringer certainly appears to be very serious about the quality of their products.  Our group was ushered into another room to preview the new 600 series of powered PA boxes with DSP on board.  They sounded and looked great as you can see.

china7.JPG

From R+D, we went to the digital piano factory.  In a product category that is dominated by Yamaha and Casio (PX series), Behringer is committed to making a splash.  Current production is running at around 1000 units a month and that quantity, we were told, will be quickly doubled.  Given the price points of this product and Behringer’s ability to up their manufacturing capacity, they might give those other brands a run for their money.

china8.JPG

Next was the amplifier factory and Behringer is vertically integrated.  They’re making everything from the pc boards to the cabinets, to the paper used in their speaker cones, it’s all done here.  Here’s Uli Behringer inspecting the final assembly line for some bass combos.  This shot of the amp chassis line gives you some idea of the high level of organization and cleanliness of the factory.  You see just a tiny portion of the sixty thousand speakers that this factory turns out every month.  We also visited the guitar factory and witnessed more of the Behringer capacity to turn out many reasonably priced instruments.

china9.JPG

china10.JPG

Uli and Michael were also proud to point out that they have a very low turn-over in workers at these factories because the Behringer personnel were well taken care of by the company.  There are three apartment buildings on the grounds that are available to the workers (6 to a unit, where other companies will house twice that many in one unit) and there are two commissaries that will feed the workers as part of their compensation package.  There are movie rooms, libraries, recreation facilities and an infirmary on the grounds to further enhance the lives of the workers.

china11.JPG

Tonight we’ll attend a celebration at the Zhongshan International Exhibition Hall (thousands are anticipated to attend) in recognition of the 5 year anniversary of Eurotec, the manufacturing branch of the Behringer company.  More on that later.

Day 2 of Daddy’s China Trip

Friday, February 2nd, 2007

As much as we’ve heard about the economic boom that has hit China, seeing it in person certainly drives the point home.  We left Hong Kong on Thursday morning and boarded a ferry for the trip to Shenzhen.  My only exposure to ferries has been old “tugs” to Staten Island, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Bridgeport to Long Island and islands off the coast of Maine, so this was a big surprise.  This ferry was a sleek, modern, hydrofoil passenger boat, no vehicles, airline type seating, with movies on board and we covered the 40-50 miles in about 90 minutes, we were moving very quickly.  After a quick bus trip from the terminal, we came to our hotel, the Shangri-La hotel.  This is, I’m told, the best hotel in town.  Fifteen to twenty years ago, for the first wave of western entrepreneurs into China, that meant; bring your own sheets, towels, cups and bowls, the conditions were very primitive.  That is no longer the case.  Our Behringer hosts put us up in a world-class 5 star hotel with amenities and service that is unrivaled.  Here’s a shot of a display for wedding packages available at the hotel, complete with Mercedes, it’s a brand new day in China

china1.JPG.

The afternoon city tour revealed dozens and dozens of building projects from factories, office buildings and housing for the workers, middle management and upper management that are pouring into the region.  This picture is of a housing development for the newly minted middle and upper classes in China, not unlike something you’d see in California, although a bit less expensive.

china2.JPG

Next, here’s Xing Zhong Road, one of the most beautiful boulevards in China, the Sports Stadium is the large building on the left and Art Museum and Center is the large glass building on the right.  We were treated to a traditional Chinese meal in an outdoor restaurant (with temperatures in the high 40’s) but were warmly greeted with a three story high string of firecrackers.

china3.JPG

china4.JPG

The tradition continued inside as we were serenaded by this duo playing a Pi Pa (on the left) and a Gu Zheng, very accomplished players but not sure it would catch on in the states.  All in all, a great evening.  Tomorrow is the factory tour and many new pictures
