There’s a lot of wood in them there hills, and in this special $19.99 package at Daddy’s. It starts with a Topp Pro brand stick bag available in black, tan or grey. The canvas bag features a shoulder strap, heavy duty zipper, 2 floor tom attaching clasps, and an internal clear pocket. This would seem to many to be worth the $19.99 price tag on its own. But wait there’s more. There are also 2 large pockets on the inside filled with 10 pairs of 5B Nylon tip sticks. Now, I’m not gonna lie to ya and tell these are 1st quality sticks. After all the brand name on the sticks is Juggs.(Don’t go there.)I will tell though that they aren’t aren’t the worst sticks around and can certainly be used as practice sticks at the very least. It’s $19.99 for a nice stick bag and 10 pairs of sticks. ’nuff said. (baseballs not included)

Black Label JD Rocked!

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Such a great night at Daddy’s Manchester last night for the Hartke sponsored John “JD” DeServio bass clinic! You guys came out of the woodwork to see him and on behalf of Daddy’s Junky Music and JD - thank you - we had a ball with you guys!

Poor JD was a bit under the weather last night with a bit of a cold that he has been nursing for a few days - which he quickly forgot about once he came out of the back room to see a full house :) He also brought along his buddy Troy who is an amazing keyboard player to jam with him - they sounded fantastic together didn’t they?! I’m sure many of you were surprised to hear JD performing lots funk & jazz last night (and performing it amazingly well).

After the clinic, we headed over to the Black Brimmer to have some dinner and catch a bit of Mama Kicks. He was called up on stage to jam for a bit and both he and drummer David Stefanelli clearly were having a blast playing off each other - especially when they decided to switch up gear - David playing bass and JD playing DRUMS! Very funny!

JD will be back for one more clinic on Monday, May 13th @ Daddy’s Boston. $5 tickets can be purchased either online here www.daddys.com or at ANY Daddy’s location. I will have 4 VIP Box ticket upgrades to see Black Label Society at the House of Blues to give away that night!

According to the BBC News Today….
Coldplay challenge ‘copy’ claims

Coldplay have denied, in a US federal court, that they copied parts of rock guitarist Joe Satriani’s music for their hit song, Viva La Vida.

Lawyers for the band argue that any similarities between the song and Satriani’s If I Could Fly were not enough to warrant damages.

Mr Satriani sued Coldplay in December, claiming they had used “substantial, original portions” of his 2004 song.

He is seeking a jury trial, damages and “any and all profits” from the song.

In court papers filed in Los Angeles, Coldplay also claim Mr Satriani’s song “lacks originality” and should not receive copyright protection.

The guitarist’s lawyer, Howard E King, said Coldplay’s response was typical for copyright infringement cases and he reiterated that he thought the matter could have been resolved without legal action.

Following Mr Satriani’s claim in December, Coldplay said in a statement on their website that the 52-year-old “did not write or have any influence on the song”.

“If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental and just as surprising to us as to him,” they added.

Great interview!

Big thanks to our friends over at the Hippo Press (www.hippopress.com) for a great interview with Black Label Society bassist John “JD” DeServio - check it out:

Heavy metal school
Black Label bassist to hold in-store clinic

By Dana Unger dunger@hippopress.com

Aspiring rockers are in for a crash course in hard-hitting metal when Black Label Society bassist and Cycle of Pain founder John “JD” DeServio appears on Wednesday, April 8, at Daddy’s Junky Music in Manchester. Currently, DeServio is touring with the Black Label Society, who will appear at Manchester’s Verizon Wireless Arena on Thursday, April 9 (tickets cost $29.50; see www.verizonwirelessarena.com).

“The tour has been going great,” DeServio said in a March 27 interview from Milwaukee, Wis. “All the shows are sold out. It’s a lot of work too, because we’re doing a lot of meet-and-greets before our shows. In fact, since we have a show tonight, that’s what I’m going to be doing today.”

Though he now lives in California, DeServio’s rocker roots run local. He briefly attended Boston’s Berklee College of Music, before leaving in 1989 to tour with Jodi Bongiovi (Jon Bon Jovi’s cousin). He later toured with Lita Ford, opening for Motley Crue on their ’89-’90 Doctor Feelgood tour.

Before DeServio joined Black Label Society, he had already had a long musical relationship with its founder, guitarist Zakk Wylde, who has been Ozzy Osbourne’s lead guitarist for 20 years.

“I knew Zakk even before he was with Ozzy,” DeServio said. “We’re both originally from Jersey, and we met because I had heard about this burning guitar player from a friend of mine. We got together and just started playing stuff together and got along really well.”

After playing with a New York band called Defunkt, he went back to New Jersey teaching music until Wylde brought DeServio in to play on his first solo project, Pride and Glory, touring Europe, Japan and the U.S., where they opened for Aerosmith. Wylde formed Black Label Society in 1998, and DeServio was brought into the band in 2000 for their first world tour, and then again in 2005.

But even during that time, DeServio continued to teach music.

“I love doing it,” he said. “I’m getting to educate and show kids there’s so much music out there. The more you know about music, the more likely you’re going to keep playing it.”

The clinics, which DeServio is conducting at several stops along the tour, are a way for aspiring musicians to learn more about the music process. “It’s pretty much me playing bass with one of my zoom pedals and just jamming over some chord jams, explaining what I’m doing and the techniques,” DeServio said. “I also play along to some Black Label tracks and Cycle of Pain tracks.”

Though DeServio said that he didn’t have one particular mentor when he was an aspiring musician, he did have influences who pushed him in his passion for music.

“I always loved music,” he said. “I had older brothers, so they introduced me to bands like The Doors, [Led] Zeppelin, [Black] Sabbath. Once my buddy brought in a poster of KISS and I pointed at Gene Simmons and asked what he did. My buddy said he plays bass, and I knew then that I wanted to be him.”

After the tour, DeServio said, Black Label will be done for the year but will be back to record another album, while his other project, Cycle of Pain will release its debut album on April 21.

“We’re going to be doing double duty, because the album drops the same day that Cycle of Pain jumps on the Black Label tour,” DeServio said. For musicians seeking the same kind of career he’s been able to cultivate over the years, DeServio said that the key to success is just to play.

“Play with as many people as you can, listen to as much music as you can, and practice and study as much as you can,” he said. “But I’d have to say that jamming with other musicians is the most important thing.”
