A sad day.

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Rolling Stone Magazine is reporting that guitar legend Les Paul has died of respiratory failure.  RIP.  So sad.  All of us at Daddy’s would like to send out thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Les Paul

Update:

Guitar legend Les Paul dies at age 94

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — Les Paul, the guitarist and inventor who changed the course of music with the electric guitar and multitrack recording and had a string of hits, many with wife Mary Ford, died on Thursday. He was 94.

According to Gibson Guitar, Paul died of complications from pneumonia at White Plains Hospital. His family and friends were by his side.

He had been hospitalized in February 2006 when he learned he won two Grammys for an album he released after his 90th birthday, “Les Paul & Friends: American Made, World Played.”

“I feel like a condemned building with a new flagpole on it,” he joked.

As an inventor, Paul helped bring about the rise of rock ‘n’ roll and multitrack recording, which enables artists to record different instruments at different times, sing harmony with themselves, and then carefully balance the “tracks” in the finished recording.

With Ford, his wife from 1949 to 1962, he earned 36 gold records and 11 No. 1 pop hits, including “Vaya Con Dios,” “How High the Moon,” “Nola” and “Lover.” Many of their songs used overdubbing techniques that Paul the inventor had helped develop.

“I could take my Mary and make her three, six, nine, 12, as many voices as I wished,” he recalled. “This is quite an asset.” The overdubbing technique was highly influential on later recording artists such as the Carpenters.

The use of electric guitar gained popularity in the mid-to-late 1940s, and then exploded with the advent of rock the 1950s.

“Suddenly, it was recognized that power was a very important part of music,” Paul once said. “To have the dynamics, to have the way of expressing yourself beyond the normal limits of an unamplified instrument, was incredible. Today a guy wouldn’t think of singing a song on a stage without a microphone and a sound system.”

A tinkerer and musician since childhood, he experimented with guitar amplification for years before coming up in 1941 with what he called “The Log,” a four-by-four piece of wood strung with steel strings.

“I went into a nightclub and played it. Of course, everybody had me labeled as a nut.” He later put the wooden wings onto the body to give it a tradition guitar shape.

In 1952, Gibson Guitars began production on the Les Paul guitar.

Pete Townsend of The Who, Steve Howe of Yes, jazz great Al DiMeola and Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page all made the Gibson Les Paul their trademark six-string.

Over the years, the Les Paul series has become one of the most widely used guitars in the music industry. In 2005, Christie’s auction house sold a 1955 Gibson Les Paul for $45,600.

Overload

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

So I am having social networking overload!   In keeping with the trends and wanting to get the word out and keep in touch with our customers as best we can, I have spent much of the last week or so taking a crash course (ie. trial by fire) in Twitter, Facebook, Myspace (i think we have had this one nailed for a while) and Youtube

So far, I find Twitter the most confusing (although we are getting there - I have also come to realize that John Mayer needs a Twitter 12 step program - he tweets ALOT!).   While I (Candi) keep everyone up to date via Twitter with upcoming events, by far the coolest thing we have cooking there is when our online guru Bob Foley Tweets about a cool piece of gear that we just got in that day, or how many “new” used pieces have come in since the day before.  For those of you who really dig used gear, you know that although we have over 10,000 pieces of used gear in stock everyday, they are all one off’s and if you don’t get there first - the piece could be gone.  So following us on Twitter to see what Bob is updating is very cool and you’ll get the info before everyone else!

Our Myspace account has always been used to keep all of our “friends” updated on upcoming clinics and events in our stores.  We are however hoping to continue to add more content (you can follow our Tweets on our Myspace as well with the widget we have up there).  It’s by far where we have the most photos of events past - so if you are looking to find pics of your favorite rockers - the Daddy’s Myspace page is where you will find it.

The Daddy’s YouTube account is very new and currently hosts videos of the finalists from our last Battle For Berklee - a guitar competition for High School guitar players.  We will be adding more content as we go such as videos from clinics, and gear reviews from our knowledgeable staff.

My personal favorite has become our Facebook page where I have essentially combined all of the above sites into one.  Whatever Bob Tweets about, I post it on Facebook.  Any event we have going on on our myspace account, will also be posted on our Facebook page.  And currently for video we have the Dennis Chambers clinic at Daddy’s Boston on there.  I like being able to interact with our friends/customers over there - seems a bit more personal.  While I wish it was like Myspace in the sense of being able to ask  people to be our “fan” - but until they give that option, we will continue to let people know that its there and do our best to get you guys to be fans.

So, I must go now and check my Myspace, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter accounts - this seriously could be a full time job :)  LOL.  In the mean time, here are the links to the above - we hope to see you over there!

Mike Portnoy ROCKS!

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

It comes as a surprise to no one that Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy draws a crowd, at least no surprise to us here at Daddy’s as we have been working with Mike for 10 years now.  But even we were overwhelmed at the response to his in-stores this time around!  The in-store at Daddy’s Boston drew well over 400 people and his instore at Daddy’s Albany,  NY, which by the way was on a Tuesday at 2:30 in the afternoon, drew out close to 200 people!  (So for all of you employers in Albany that had employees call in sick yesterday,  sorry :)

Mike certainly has some of the most loyal fans I have ever seen, they know everything there is to know about everything Mike Portnoy & Dream Theater, they buy everything there is to buy related to Dream Theater and Mike Portnoy  - its actually pretty special to see.

On behalf of Daddy’s we would like to thank all of you who came out of the woodwork the last couple of days for the meet & greets and look forward to seeing you in the future.  I also want to give a shout out to the staff at both Daddy’s Boston and Daddy’s Albany for doing a great job during these events and of course to Mike Portnoy, we love you, man!
