2005 Overall Excellence In Retail – Creative Clinics

Music, Inc. Magazine, December 2005 issue
Strong promotions, quality used gear and unrivaled customer service has long defined Manchester, NH-based Daddy’s Junky Music, a 33 year-old family business with 21 locations in the competitive New England market. And at Daddy’s, nothing gets the customer buzzing more than the store’s clinics, which often pair up A-list artists in exclusive presentations of equipment and technique.

Pairing Up The Masters
Candi Bramante, publicity director and daughter of company founder Fred Bramante, is the brainchild behind Daddy’s high profile clinics.

“Candi puts together shows with guys like Billy Sheehan with Dennis Chambers,” said Chris Gleason, senior vice president of Daddy’s Junky Music. “Frankly, you’re never going to see players of this caliber sitting together in a music store at any one time, so that’s a special thing.”

Bramante’s other brilliant artist-pairings have included Mike Mangini with Victor Wooten; and Kenny Aronoff, Doug Pinnick and Gary Cherone all jamming on Led Zeppelin tunes.

The majority of Daddy’s clinics are held in-store, as the company seeks to take advantage of getting people in the door. However, special events sometimes require Daddy’s to use an outside venue instead – as it did for the recent Sabian-sponsored presentation of Neil Peart’s drumset and drum tech, “The Voyage of the S.S. Professor,” held at a local night club in Manchester, NH.

“They had stage lighting, sound and everything all set up and ready to go,” Gleason said. “The Neil Peart fans came out in droves, and this was as close as they were going to get to the man himself for many of them probably.”

Differentiating With Service
Daddy’s staff offers a lot of technical expertise, as well. Repairs have been part of the company’s fabric since the early years. Currently Daddy’s services anywhere from 275-325 units per week in a department managed by Mick Bramante, Fred’s son. “It’s a great customer service, and it’s something that we use in helping to close the sale,” Gleason said.

Another great sales-closing tool for Daddy’s is an expanded benefits program that includes an extended warranty and other value-added items like discounts on accessories and reduced ticket prices on clinics. “Every time you sell a customer an item, you’re really forming a business partnership with them, and it has to be a two-way street,” Gleason said. “The extended warranty is fine, but they’re also getting a lot more out of their purchase than just that: They become an extra special customer of Daddy’s.”

Boston Phoenix Readers Poll

Best place to buy musical instruments 2005
Berklee has been a consistent font of incredible musicians and bands - as has Boston in general. So we must have a music store suitable for these illustrious customers. You've chosen Daddy's Junky Music as the choice for your instrument needs. With locations all over the Northeast, Daddy's has an immense selection of new and used guitars, as well as keyboards, drums, and recording equipment - for sale or rent. They offer workshops with professional musicians and networking nights for aspiring pros, and they've got a sweet giant Elvis head in their Boston store. If that atmosphere doesn't breed rock stars, then I don't know what does!

Best store for musical instruments 2004
Boston is famed for being the birthplace of many a music career, and we've got the stores to prove it. Cambridge Music Center, across from the Porter Square Shopping Center, sells guitars, amps, percussion instruments, music books, lesson books, sheet music, and all the necessary accessories. The selection includes new and used items, and the store buys and sells a lot on consignment. If you take the easily missed stairs next door, you'll find yourself in the extensive classical-sheet-music room. In fact, Cambridge Music Center provides all the sheet music for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It also offers private-lesson packages for instruction in 14 different instruments, including voice. Across the street from the Berklee School of Music (where else?) sits Daddy's Junky Music. It features new and used guitars, drums, keyboards, bass guitars, and professional recording equipment, and many of the products are available for rental as well. And in addition to the giant Elvis head and alien that inhabit the store, there are frequent free clinics with famous visiting musicians and artists.

Best place to buy musical instruments 2000
Boston's music scene is divided into many camps, each with its own sonic aesthetic. Metalheads value volume and thrash potential; Berklee jazz cats demand clean tones and tasteful effects; folk-strummers just want idyllic acoustic sounds; and hip-hop DJs thrive on turntable wicky-wicky and subwoofer thump. Although you'll never find these musicians commingling on local stages, they all come together at Daddy's Junky Music, a haven for wanna-be rock stars. Not only does Daddy's offer a world-class selection of amps, guitars, effects, and recording gear, but it's damn convenient, with five stores in the Boston area. There's probably a Daddy's not too far from you.

Best place to buy musical instruments 1999
Maybe it's the 12-foot-tall Elvis that greets you, but there's some kind of spell that falls over even the most casual musicians once they set foot inside Daddy's Junky Music. The Boston outpost, the largest store in the chain, is a haven for would-be rockers and future jazz greats. Ideally situated for Berklee College of Music students (only steps away from their favorite doorways for smoking), it also draws musicians from around the world as they pass through town. With an entire wall of guitars, both new and used, it has fueled the band fantasies of many a young Zeppelin fanatic and supplied countless garage bands working the Boston scene. And its serious selection of PA products means a band can ensure its music comes across loud and clear -- Daddy's is probably responsible for more of the post-show ringing in your ears than you know. In every way, Daddy's isn't junky at all -- it's king.

Best place to buy musical instruments 1998
Daddy's Junky Music is a winner with tour-bus loads of Boston-area musicians. Apart from the new equipment it sells, Daddy's always has a good supply of used (often vintage) guitars, as well as new and used electronic keyboards, drum machines, and DJing equipment. If you're serious about your band or your studio, then check out their PA systems, four-tracks, and mixing boards -- you want somebody to hear you, right? If simplicity suits your style, and tradition's bred in your bones, don't fret: you can always go home with a Hohner harmonica.
