Pro Tools and Recording March 2008

Update:
Pro Tools 7.4.1 has been updated for Mac OS 10.5 Leopard software. This is for HD users and has not updated for LE yet. I can imagine this applies to exactly “zero” percent of my readers! There are not a lot of updates going on, not much else to say in this section, except that if you don’t have a Pro Tools system, you need to get one and learn it. Why you may ask? Here are some reasons…

  • Unmatched sound quality, when you do your first voiceover or recording the quality will blow your mind!
  • It is the most widely used recording software on the planet. It is also compatible with just about everything now via Digi translator and OMF files
  • Now with the VST wrapper, virtually every plug in made is compatible with Pro Tools, nobody else can say that!

There is instructional stuff out there…do not be afraid!

Just like any recording software out there, there is a learning curve to Pro Tools. Rest easy though, it makes sense that the most widely used recording software will have the largest amount of instructional material available for it, right? There are many people putting out instructional DVD’s and books for Pro Tools users. From beginner to advanced. I have a recommendation following;

A quick word on Pro Tools instructional DVD’s…if you are thinking about taking the plunge into the Pro Tools world, watch the instructional DVD that comes with your system. The DVD is excellent and will help you get started without feeling overwhelmed by the software. After you get going and have a basic understanding of the software, you can pick up some excellent advanced instructional DVD’s at your local Daddy’s. These DVD’s are from “Secrets of the Pro’s” and the DVD’s are paced well and really make sense. There are tons of useful tips and tricks as well. Highly recommended for anyone getting into Pro Tools!!!

There are many exchange programs going on at Digidesign right now…

The biggest exchange program out there right now from Digidesign is the 3rd party exchange program. If you have Cakewalk Sonar, Cubase, Nuendo, and any hardware interface, you can trade it in toward a Pro Tools LE Digi 003 system at a cheaper price. We can do this order for you at any Daddy’s location, stop by our stores for more info on it and make the move toward Pro Tools! See Digidesign.com and click on the special offers section for a complete price list and more info. They are offering additional savings on the music production tool kit that includes some excellent plug ins like TL Space (Trillium lanes) reverb plug in. Very cool!

Tips

When recording into Pro Tools using condenser mic’s, make sure you have isolated outside noise as much as possible. This is easy in most professional studios, but not so easy if you are recording at home. You might get an excellent take on that vocal and then hear your furnace kick on in the background and ruin your take. Condenser mic’s are very sensitive and will pick up all kinds of sounds from the recording environment. Also remember that wood is an excellent conduit for sound travel and vibration. Sounds from downstairs can travel through the floor and right up the mic stand into your recordings! A few ways to avoid this are to put something under the mic stand and shock proof it. Yes, I have used carpet and dish sponges before! Whatever works, right? Don’t look now but you are taking advice from a guy whose control room is floating on 55 hockey pucks! Yes, hockey pucks have the same shock absorbing properties as the really expensive rubber shield that some studio acoustic companies make. Enough babbling, until next month, happy recording!

Whatever your recording needs are, whatever your application is, we can help! Contact your local Daddy’s store for assistance with purchasing the Pro Tools system that is right for you. Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions you may have about the systems, I would be happy to help you out! You can also make arrangements with me to see a demonstration at a Daddy’s store in Salem NH. E-mail me at mattdjm@aol.com
